The role at a glance
Every lesson is online, one tutor with one learner on video, so you teach from home at the hours you keep free in Cairo time.
The role is part-time: you teach as an independent tutor, alongside your studies or your other work.
The fee
The fee runs from EGP 90 to 410 an hour by subject and level; each offer names its exact rate before you accept it, and we pay you for every lesson you teach.
Every learner who asks for a different tutor gets one free of charge, so each match you keep is a learner who chose to stay.
If you teach at a government school or a university today, apply all the same: a person reviews your application first and talks it through with you.
- Role
- Chemistry Tutor, Thanaweya Amma Grade 12 and Baccalaureate Grade 11, Online
- Type
- Part-time, independent tutor

What you do
- Work with a single learner per lesson, live on video, through the five chapters of the Secondary 3 chemistry book or the four chapters of the Baccalaureate Secondary 2 book.
- Build each learner's written answers alongside the multiple-choice sheet, since both 2027 certificates now split their papers evenly between the two.
- Work numerical chemistry (pH, equilibrium constants, cell potentials, titration and precipitation calculations) step by step until the learner can do it without prompts.
- Diagnose the exact point where a topic breaks for a learner, from ion detection to organic naming, and plan the next lessons around it.
- Set short practice after each lesson and mark it before the next one, with the corrections shown on screen.
- Teach in Arabic, or in English for learners from official language schools who sit the paper in English.
- Log every lesson you teach so the learner's progress and your fee are tracked lesson by lesson.
What you bring
- A degree in chemistry, pharmacy, science education, chemical engineering or a close field, or years of teaching chemistry at secondary level.
- Command of the current Secondary 3 chemistry textbook, chapter by chapter, and readiness to teach from the 2027 Baccalaureate Secondary 2 book.
- Confidence with the arithmetic of chemistry, including logarithms, ratios and units.
- Clear spoken and written Arabic; fluent scientific English if you take language-school learners.
- A laptop or tablet, a reliable internet line and a quiet room where a lesson can run without interruption.
Skills that show in a lesson
- Writing equations, structural formulae and cell notations clearly on a shared screen.
- Asking a learner to explain a step aloud before letting them move on to recall.
- Turning a long list to memorise, such as the anion tests, into a pattern a learner can reason from.
- Reading a multiple-choice error and tracing it back to the idea behind it.
- Keeping a lesson to time and a term's plan to the exam calendar.
Sixty marks shared by two branches
Chemistry is one of the five subjects that count towards the Thanaweya Amma total. The Science branch and the Mathematics branch both sit it, so the learners who book this role come from either side of the certificate, and many of them are aiming at faculties where every mark moves them up or down the Tansik list.

In 2026 the first-stage Tansik minimum stood at 94.06% for medicine, 93.28% for dentistry and 92.03% for pharmacy. Those lines change every year with the number of applicants, their choices and the seats on offer, which is why learners treat chemistry as a subject where a single lost question matters. A tutor in this role works with that pressure every week and keeps it pointed at the next lesson.
The paper your learners will sit in 2027
The 2026 Thanaweya Amma chemistry paper was sat by both branches on Thursday 2 July, from 9am to noon. It was built almost entirely from the bubble sheet: 46 questions, of which 44 were multiple choice. The specification placed 30% of the questions at the higher levels, the ones that ask a learner to apply and analyse.
| Part | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | 44 | 56 |
| Written answers | 2 | 4 |
| Whole paper | 46 | 60 |
Starting this school year, 2026/27, the Secondary 3 paper moves to an even split of multiple choice and written questions.

A ministerial decision in August 2026 split the Secondary 3 papers evenly, 50% multiple choice and 50% written questions, from this school year. For chemistry that is the largest change a tutor will handle this year. A learner who has spent three years shading circles now has to write an equation in full, balance it, name a product correctly and justify an observation in a sentence. The syllabus itself stays as it was for 2026/27, so the content is familiar and the skill being examined is new.
Five chapters and the places they break
The Secondary 3 book runs in five chapters. Each one has a point where learners reliably lose their grip, and an applicant for this role should already know those points from the inside.
- Transition elements. The first series from scandium to zinc, electron configuration and oxidation states, magnetic properties, catalysis, iron extraction, alloys and the iron oxides. Configurations that break the expected pattern catch learners who memorised a rule without the reason behind it.
- Chemical analysis. Anion detection by reagent group, the basic radical, volumetric and gravimetric analysis. The tests turn into a long list to memorise unless the tutor shows why each reagent picks out its group.
- Chemical equilibrium. Reversible reactions, reaction rate and ionic equilibrium. pH work is where the arithmetic gives way, usually at the logarithm, and where learners decide too quickly that every salt dissolves to a neutral solution.
- Electrochemistry. Galvanic cells, the salt bridge, electrode potentials and the electrochemical series, then the mercury cell, the fuel cell, the lead acid battery and the lithium ion battery. The thread from the anode to the sign of the cell potential is the one learners drop.
- Organic chemistry. Structural formulae and isomerism, the classes of hydrocarbons, cyclic and aromatic compounds. Naming is the recurring loss of marks, and with written questions returning it now costs more.
Grade 11 on the Baccalaureate engineering track
The Egyptian Baccalaureate has become the main route through secondary school: by the ministry's report, over 95% of Secondary 1 pupils chose it. In Secondary 2, learners on the Engineering and Computer Science track take chemistry, or programming and artificial intelligence, as their track subject beside Arabic, Egyptian history and the first foreign language. This role covers the chemistry side of that choice.

The Secondary 2 textbook is a different animal from the Thanaweya Amma book. It runs to four chapters and 52 lessons: States of Matter, Change and Equilibrium of Matter (from enthalpy changes through to the solubility product), Inorganic Substances, and Organic Compounds, which closes on the separation of aromatic compounds. Its lessons carry stations called "Think like an engineer", "Misconception Alert" and "Key equations at a glance", and a tutor who teaches from it should use those stations the way the authors intended. The ministry also publishes a companion book of classroom performances, home performances and weekly assessments laid out over 15 weeks of the first term, and that weekly rhythm is the one your Baccalaureate learners live by.
Where these learners stumble is different too. They get the arithmetic right and the unit wrong. They mix up a galvanic cell with electrolysis. They can recite Le Chatelier's principle and still cannot predict which way a real system will shift. They memorise inorganic chemistry fact by fact without a thread to hang it on, and they find structural formulae and synthesis routes hard to hold in their heads at once. A good tutor here explains the way an engineer would ask the question: what goes in, what comes out, and what the numbers must add up to.
Teaching the galvanic cell live on screen
One hour on electrochemistry with a Grade 12 learner
Start from the last homework
Open the learner's marked practice on screen and pick the one wrong answer that reveals the most. Ask them to talk through how they reached it.
Draw the cell together
Sketch two half-cells, the salt bridge and the external wire on the shared whiteboard. The learner labels the anode, the cathode and the direction of electron flow before anything is calculated.
Read the series
Use the electrochemical series to decide which metal is oxidised. The learner writes both half-equations and the overall equation in full, with states.
Put a sign on the potential
Work out the cell potential from the electrode potentials and ask what its sign says about the reaction. This is the step learners usually skip, so it gets its own time.
Switch to the bubble sheet
Run a handful of multiple-choice items on the same cell, timed, then go back to any one the learner missed and trace the idea behind the wrong choice.
Write one answer out
Close with a written question in exam form: the learner explains why the salt bridge is needed, in full sentences, and you mark it live.
Teaching language-school learners in English
Learners from official language schools sit the Thanaweya Amma chemistry paper in English, and the Baccalaureate book has its own English edition beside the Arabic one. These learners need a tutor who moves between the two vocabularies without slowing down: oxidation state and عدد التأكسد, precipitate and راسب, isomer and متشكل. If your scientific English is fluent, say so on your application, because these bookings need it from the first minute.
The year, month by month
The calendar sets the pace of this role, and the two certificates run to slightly different clocks.
- Autumn term. Grade 12 learners meet transition elements and chemical analysis first, and the anion tests are where many of them reach for help. Baccalaureate learners begin the weekly assessments that decide whether they may sit the first attempt at all.
- Winter. Equilibrium and electrochemistry fill the Grade 12 lessons. This is the season to build the written answers properly, with time still on your side.
- Spring. Organic chemistry and full revision. Baccalaureate learners prepare for their compulsory free first attempt.
- June and July. The school year ends on Thursday 24 June 2027, and the first-round Thanaweya Amma exams fill 26 June to 21 July. Lessons become short, frequent and close to the paper. Baccalaureate learners who want a better mark prepare for the optional July attempt.
- August. Tansik runs through its electronic portal in stages. Learners who failed or missed one or two subjects prepare for the second round, where any mark earned is added to the total at half of the subject maximum whatever the actual score.
The rhythm suits a tutor who can give steady hours through the year and a little more in the exam season, when both certificates reach their papers. A tutor who starts with a learner in the autumn and stays through to the last exam sees the whole syllabus land in order.
The craft this subject asks of you
Chemistry tutors who do well in this role share a handful of habits. They teach from the current textbook, page by page, because the paper is written from it. They are precise in chemical writing: a missing state symbol or a charge on the wrong side is corrected every time. They check that an idea is understood before they ask for it to be recalled, and they keep practice balanced between the bubble sheet and the written answer.
Depth beyond the syllabus matters as well. A learner who asks why copper and chromium break the filling order deserves a real answer, and the tutor able to give one wins that learner's trust for the rest of the year. Each tutor is matched to a learner by subject, level and language, and any learner can move to a different chemistry tutor free of charge, which gives every pairing a sound start.
