The year group that entered Secondary 1 in 2024/25 stays on the Thanaweya Amma and sits it in summer 2027. In 2026, 883,690 learners registered for the new-system exam, 543,120 of them in the science branch.

How the system and its exams work

Five subjects and 320 marks

Each branch has five subjects in the total: Arabic out of 80 and four subjects out of 60 each, 320 in all, down from 410 in the old system. Religious education, national education and the second foreign language are pass or fail and sit outside the total.

Exam format
From 2026/27, half of each paper is multiple choice and half is written, by a minister’s decision of August 2026.
2027 dates
26 June to 21 July 2027 in the announced ministry calendar. In 2026 the resit round ran in August.
University admission
In 2026 the first admission phase opened at 292 marks for science, 275.5 for mathematics and 229 for literary.

No decision has abolished it, and the current Secondary 3 year group sits it in summer 2027. Ministry decisions also point to a sitting in 2028, since the rule on completing 60% of assessments applies to it from 2027/28.
