Who these courses are for

For anyone who chooses this path, at any age

Al-Azhar oversees about 12,000 Quran memorisation offices serving 3 to 4 million students, according to its head of Quran affairs. Online lessons open one more way in for learners with tight timetables or who live far away.

  • Young learners taking their first steps in memorisation, with a parent keeping track
  • Adults who want to memorise or correct their recitation
  • Learners preparing for a tajweed ijaza
  • Non-native speakers of Arabic starting from the letters
  • Egyptians living abroad

Levels and tests

Three programmes, each with its own path

Quran memorisation moves at a pace of new portions and revision agreed by the learner and the tutor. Tajweed begins with the rules of recitation and, for those who want it, leads on to preparing for the ijaza exam. Arabic for non-native speakers is a separate language programme that starts from letters and sounds.

Memorisation
A new portion and regular revision of what you have memorised, at the pace that suits you.
Tajweed and ijaza
In the first round of 2025/26, 3,017 learners sat Al-Azhar’s tajweed ijaza exam and 32.98% passed.
Arabic for non-native speakers
About 90,000 international students from 129 countries study at Al-Azhar, by its figures of December 2025.
Ijaza and chain
A tutor’s ijaza or chain of transmission is named only when the tutor holds it, and you can ask about it before the first lesson.

Where online lessons fit your week

Your own circle, online

Memorisation and tajweed need careful listening and correction in the moment, and a one-to-one online lesson gives the tutor full attention for your recitation alone. Together you agree a steady portion for memorisation and revision, at times that suit your day.

  • Recitation corrected as you recite
  • Regular revision of what you have memorised
  • Times after school for children and after work for adults
  • In Cairo time, or in your local time if you live abroad

Common questions

Arabic for non-native speakers is a separate language programme that welcomes learners of every background. It starts from letters and sounds and goes on to reading and conversation.

Yes. The tutor starts a child with a small portion and short revision, and a parent follows the times and the progress.

Tutors who hold an ijaza and a chain of transmission name them, and you can ask about them before the first lesson. If an ijaza is your goal, say so in your enquiry and we match you with a tutor suited to it. If the recitation of the tutor we suggest does not suit your ear, we introduce another teacher at no charge.

The learner and the tutor agree the portion from the time available and the capacity to revise. A small, steady portion stays in memory longer than a large one that tires you.

Yes. We agree times in Cairo time and in your local time together, and every lesson is online.
