Who it is for
For Egyptian learners in international schools, from kindergarten to secondary
The identity subjects are part of school life at every international school in Egypt, and their marks affect promotion and certificate equivalency. In private and international schools the Grade 9 pass rate fell from 88.5% in 2024/25 to 71.9% in 2025/26, figures the education minister gave when he spoke about these rules.
- Kindergarten and primary pupils in Arabic
- Learners in Grades 4 to 9 in Arabic and social studies
- Secondary learners in Arabic and history for the certificate equivalency
- IGCSE, American Diploma, IB and other international-curriculum learners
- Learners who want to join the Egyptian Baccalaureate after an international certificate
How the system and its exams work
What the ministry asks for at each stage
Ministry rules set the identity subjects by stage and give some of them a weight in the yearly grade. On 6 September 2026 the ministry told the education directorates to test international-school learners in them from Grade 3 of primary to Secondary 3.
- Kindergarten
- Arabic.
- Grades 1 to 3
- Arabic and religious education.
- Grades 4 to 9
- Arabic, religious education and social studies; Arabic and social studies each carry 10% of the yearly grade.
- Secondary
- For an international certificate made equivalent to the Thanaweya Amma, Arabic and history carry 10% each, in an exam the ministry sets.
- Moving to the Baccalaureate
- IGCSE, American Diploma and IB learners need at least 50% in the Grade 9 international exams and 70% in the identity subjects.

Where online lessons fit
Identity subjects in a full timetable
An international-school learner balances a full international curriculum with the identity subjects, and short, regular online lessons fit that week. The tutor works on reading and writing in Modern Standard Arabic and ties social studies and history to the style of the ministry’s questions.
- Explanations in Arabic, with an English word when it helps
- Practice with ministry-style questions at every stage
- Times after the long international-school day
- A plan that follows the directorate’s test dates
