Who it is for
For Secondary 2 learners in the Baccalaureate
Most learners who started Secondary 1 in 2025/26 chose the Baccalaureate; ministry statements put the share between 92% and 95%. That year group is now in Secondary 2 and faces the first exam that counts towards the certificate. Every one of them needs the three core subjects and the elective of their track.
- Medicine and Life Sciences learners, in mathematics or physics
- Engineering and Computer Science learners, in chemistry or programming and AI
- Business learners, in accounting
- Every learner in Arabic, Egyptian history and the first foreign language
- Secondary 1 learners who want firm foundations before choosing a track
How the system and its exams work
Four tracks, with marks gathered over two years
Secondary 1 is common to everyone. In Secondary 2 each learner joins one of four tracks and four subjects count: Arabic, Egyptian history, the first foreign language and one elective from the track. Secondary 3 adds the track’s two specialist subjects at an advanced level. Every subject is marked out of 100, and the best of your attempts counts.
- The law
- Law 169 of 2025, published in the Official Gazette on 13 August 2025, made the Baccalaureate optional and free, three years long, with a certificate equivalent to the Thanaweya Amma.
- Tracks
- Medicine and Life Sciences; Engineering and Computer Science; Business; Arts and Humanities. A Secondary 3 learner may change track by studying the new track’s specialist subjects.
- Marks
- The certificate is out of 600: 400 from Secondary 2 and 200 from Secondary 3. Religious education needs 70% to pass and sits outside the total.
- Attempts
- Secondary 2 sits a compulsory, free first attempt in May and an optional second attempt in July for a fee. Secondary 3 sits in June and again in August.
- Exam format
- From 2026/27, half of every paper is multiple choice and half is written answers. Completing 60% of weekly and monthly assessments is a condition for the first attempt.
- University admission
- Admission for Baccalaureate holders uses marks only, except at faculties that already set aptitude tests.
