Thanaweya Amma · the 2027 sitting

Thanaweya Amma physics for Secondary 3 (Grade 12), taught live online

Thanaweya Amma physics is a counted subject in both science branches, 60 of the 320 marks, and our network of 1,800+ tutors teaches it across Egypt. Lessons here are live and online, one tutor with one learner, worked through the ministry textbook chapter by chapter, and they begin at the point where your own marks are leaking.

The 2027 papers run from 26 June to 21 July 2027, the first Thanaweya Amma sitting in which half the marks come from essay questions and half from multiple choice.

What you will study

The Secondary 3 physics syllabus: eight chapters in two units

The ministry book falls into two units: current electricity with electromagnetism, then an introduction to modern physics. Beside each chapter are the marks it carried in the 2026 paper.

  1. Chapter 1: Electric current, Ohm's law and Kirchhoff's laws

    Unit 1 · 8 marks in 2026

Current and resistance, series and parallel circuits, electromotive force with internal resistance, then the two Kirchhoff laws. The marks lost here go on signs inside one loop.

Current and resistance · EMF and internal resistance · Kirchhoff's two laws

  2. Chapter 2: The magnetic effect of a current, and measuring instruments

    Unit 1 · 12 marks in 2026

The field around a straight wire, a coil and a solenoid, the force acting on a conductor carrying current, then the galvanometer, ammeter and voltmeter. Three dimensions are the first hurdle.

Fields around wires and coils · Force on a conductor · Galvanometer, ammeter, voltmeter

  3. Chapter 3: Electromagnetic induction

    Unit 1 · 14 marks in 2026

The heaviest chapter in 2026: magnetic flux, Faraday's law and Lenz's rule, self and mutual induction, the transformer, the dynamo and the motor. Graphs and written reasoning both appear.

Magnetic flux and Faraday's law · Lenz's rule · Transformer, dynamo, motor

  4. Chapter 4: Alternating current circuits

    Unit 1 · 8 marks in 2026

A resistor, a coil and a capacitor in an alternating current, then impedance, resonance and power. The chapter turns on phase, so formulae without the angles lose the calculations.

Resistor, coil and capacitor · Impedance and phase · Resonance and power

  5. Chapter 5: Wave-particle duality

    Unit 2 · 7 marks in 2026

Unit two opens here: black body radiation, the photoelectric effect, the Compton effect, the wave nature of particles and the electron microscope. These questions reward understanding over arithmetic.

Black body radiation · The photoelectric effect · Wave nature of particles

  6. Chapter 6: Atomic spectra

    Unit 2 · 4 marks in 2026

Line and continuous spectra, the energy levels of the hydrogen atom and its series, and X-rays. Short by marks, with exact questions separating absorption from emission.

Line and continuous spectra · Hydrogen series · X-rays

  7. Chapter 7: The laser

    Unit 2 · 3 marks in 2026

Population inversion, stimulated emission and the resonant cavity, then the properties of a laser beam and its uses. The lightest chapter, and it rewards getting the steps in order.

Population inversion · Stimulated emission · The resonant cavity

  8. Chapter 8: Modern electronics

    Unit 2 · 4 marks in 2026

The semiconductor crystal and doping, the diode in forward and reverse bias, the transistor, and analogue and digital electronics. Last in the book, so many reach it once revision starts.

Semiconductor crystal and doping · The diode · The transistor

Those marks are what the press reported for 2026; the 2027 distribution comes with the new specification.

How lessons run

How a physics lesson runs

One diagnostic lesson, then a written plan on the order of the ministry book, revisited every fortnight against what the practice papers show.

  1. Step 1

A diagnostic lesson before any teaching

You work a short paper from chapters already covered: a simple circuit, the direction of an induced current, one conceptual question from modern physics. The result decides where the plan starts.

  2. Step 2

A written plan on the order of the book

The eight chapters are spread across both terms, with more time on those carrying the heaviest marks. The plan is sent to you, and it moves when school falls behind or a test nears.

  3. Step 3

Teaching on a shared board, the steps left visible

Each law is built in front of you: where it comes from, what stays fixed, what changes, then a worked example line by line. The board reaches you afterwards.

  4. Step 4

Practice in both question types the paper uses

Half the time goes on timed multiple choice and on close-set options. The other half goes on a clean written answer: the quantities given, then the law, the substitution, a result carrying its unit, and two lines of reasoning.

  5. Step 5

A short timed test every fortnight, and a report

A timed paper on what has been covered, then a walk through the mistakes question by question. A short report follows: the chapters that have settled and the errors that keep returning.

  6. Step 6

Final revision on the ministry's own papers

In the closing months the lessons become full timed attempts at the indicative papers and past papers, with a pause after each to read the mistakes and fix the order of an answer.

Times are Cairo time; lessons sit around the school day and monthly tests.

The exam

The physics paper in the Thanaweya Amma 2027

The ministry sets this paper and marks it. The 2026 figures show the shape the exam has had. In 2027 the weighting changes: half multiple choice, half essay.

  • Set by

Ministry of Education and Technical Education

It sets the syllabus and the paper, and publishes indicative papers for each subject on its electronic library.

The whole physics paper (2026 shape)

Duration
3 hours, 9:00 to 12:00
Marks
60 marks
Weighting
60 of the 320 total

46 questions spread across all eight chapters, nothing left out

How a tutor helps

The paper is attempted at full length under the clock, with a minute budget per page, so the time does not drain into two questions and leave the last chapter unread.

Multiple choice, one mark each

Marks
32 questions · 32 marks
Weighting
32 of the 60 marks in 2026

Short questions spread across the eight chapters at graded levels

How a tutor helps

The options sit close together on purpose, so the drill is to read twice and strike out any option whose units or direction are wrong.

Multiple choice, two marks each

Marks
12 questions · 24 marks
Weighting
24 of the 60 marks in 2026

Longer questions, each joining more than one calculation step

How a tutor helps

A single slip costs double here, so the working goes on a side sheet and the unit is checked first. Estimating the order of magnitude exposes an odd answer.

Two essay questions

Marks
2 questions · 4 marks
Weighting
4 of the 60 marks in 2026

An answer written out by hand, with reasoning or full working

How a tutor helps

Order earns the marks: the quantities given, the law, the substitution, the result with its unit, two lines of reasoning and a small diagram. This part grows in 2027.

Marks and marking

Physics is marked out of 60 and a pass starts at 30. The new-system total is 320 marks, while old-system candidates are marked out of 410.

Worth knowing

  • The ministry says questions cover the whole syllabus with nothing cut or lightened (press, Youm7).
  • In 2026 the multiple-choice answers were marked electronically from a bubble sheet (press, Shbabbek).
  • From 2027/2028, 60% of weekly and monthly assessments must be completed to sit the Thanaweya Amma (press, Youm7).
  • A second round follows a fail in one or two subjects; three or more means repeating the year (press, Matn News).

What we look for in a tutor

What we look for in a Secondary 3 physics tutor

The standards every tutor of this subject meets with us.

  • Real depth in physics

A university background in physics or engineering, and the habit of showing where a law comes from.

  • Knows the current ministry book

Teaches from the eight chapters in order, and checks what changed in the new printing before term starts.

  • Shows the step, then asks you for it

Writes the full solution in front of you, then asks you to say it back before the next example begins.

  • Exact about units and directions

Corrects the unit, the symbol and the direction on every line, because those details decide the multiple-choice questions.

  • Trains for the 2027 paper

Balances timed multiple-choice drill with writing a clean essay answer, because the new paper asks for both.

  • Calm in a heavy year

Speaks plainly and with respect, and treats a poor mark as information for next week's plan without dramatising it.

Where learners get stuck

Where learners get stuck in physics

Six places where physics learners stall, and the tutor's move at each one.

  • EMF and terminal potential difference blur together

    Why it happens

The two get used as one value, and the internal resistance mark disappears from every closed-circuit question.

    How a tutor helps

We draw the circuit twice, once with the switch open and once closed, and put numbers on the gap until it stops being abstract.

  • Signs in a Kirchhoff loop

    Why it happens

A direction chosen once is forgotten at the second source, which flips one term and the whole answer.

    How a tutor helps

One habit is fixed: the arrow is drawn first, the terms follow in the same order, and the answer is checked round the loop.

  • The direction of an induced current, and Lenz's rule

    Why it happens

Three dimensions are hard to hold on flat paper, so one demonstration gets memorised and misapplied elsewhere.

    How a tutor helps

We start from one question: is the flux rising or falling? The opposing current follows, on a magnet, a coil or a rotating loop alike.

  • Phase and impedance in alternating current circuits

    Why it happens

Formulae are memorised with no picture of the angles, so resistances get added as plain numbers.

    How a tutor helps

The impedance triangle is drawn before any arithmetic, and resonance is tied to the case where the inductive and capacitive parts are equal.

  • The photoelectric effect: frequency or brightness?

    Why it happens

Everyday intuition says brighter light does more, while the experiment says frequency alone frees the electron.

    How a tutor helps

We read the graph: what moves as intensity rises, and what moves as frequency rises. Then you say it back in your own words.

  • Chapter 8 gets read in a hurry

    Why it happens

Modern electronics sits last in the book, so learners arrive there once revision has begun.

    How a tutor helps

The diode and the transistor come forward into the second term in small weekly doses, so revision starts with that chapter already known.

Common questions

Questions Secondary 3 physics learners ask

The first-round papers run from 26 June 2027 to 21 July 2027. Where physics sits inside that window comes with the ministry's detailed timetable, which by 24 September 2026 had not appeared. In 2026 the paper fell on 9 July.

Physics is worth 60 marks, with the pass at 30. The certificate total is 320: Arabic out of 80 and four subjects out of 60 each. Candidates on the old system are marked out of 410.

Yes. Physics is counted in both science branches and enters both totals. In 2026, 543,120 registered in the science branch and 145,459 in the mathematics branch, all sitting the same paper.

The weighting of the questions. The ministry's announcement of 17 August 2026 splits Thanaweya Amma papers into two halves: 50% multiple choice, 50% essay, from the 2026/2027 school year. The detailed physics specification follows later.

No single number fits everyone. It depends on how much of the eight chapters remains and on the level the first diagnostic paper shows. The number is agreed after that lesson and reviewed after each short test.

Ask for a new one and the change is free, whenever in the year you raise it. Tell us what should feel different, perhaps slower derivations of each law or more drill on electric-current problems, and another Secondary 3 physics tutor picks up your first diagnostic paper and your short-test results, then carries on through the eight chapters from wherever you stopped.

The certificate stands for your year group. The Egyptian Baccalaureate is a parallel system begun at Secondary 1, and in May 2026 the ministry put take-up above 95% in that year. A Thanaweya Amma rule starts in 2027/2028, so it continues past your year.

Tansik, the central admission office, works from the total, and physics is 60 marks of it. For scale, the first stage in 2026 set medicine at 94.06%, dentistry at 93.28%, pharmacy at 92.03% and engineering from 86.41%.

Start by finding the chapters the marks leak from, using a diagnostic paper. The plan then gives them more of the week. A fail in one or two subjects leads to a second round; three or more means repeating the year.
