The role at a glance

Every lesson is online, one tutor with one learner on video, so you teach from home at the hours you keep free in Cairo time.

The role is part-time: you teach as an independent tutor, alongside your studies or your other work.

The fee

The fee runs from EGP 90 to 410 an hour by subject and level; each offer names its exact rate before you accept it, and we pay you for every lesson you teach.

Every learner who asks for a different tutor gets one free of charge, so each match you keep is a learner who chose to stay.

If you teach at a government school or a university today, apply all the same: a person reviews your application first and talks it through with you.

What you do

  • Teach Secondary 3 pure mathematics: the binomial theorem, complex numbers, geometry in three dimensions, lines and planes in space, differentiation, the behaviour of functions and the definite integral.
  • Teach Secondary 3 applied mathematics: moments, coplanar forces and couples in statics, then straight-line motion, Newton's laws, and work, energy and power in dynamics.
  • Teach Secondary 2 Baccalaureate mathematics on the Medicine and Life Sciences track, from algebraic proofs and sequences to complex numbers and coordinate geometry.
  • Read each learner's written working line by line and mark where a solution first goes wrong.
  • Build timed practice on the ministry's sample papers so a learner finishes a two-hour paper with minutes to check.
  • Train the essay half of the paper: full, ordered solutions that a marker can follow from the first line.
  • After each lesson, log the methods practised and the point the next lesson opens with.

What you bring

  • A degree in mathematics, engineering, science or education with a strong mathematics component.
  • Command of both halves of the Secondary 3 paper, pure and applied, at the level of the current school books.
  • Fluent Arabic for the Arabic edition of the books, and confident mathematical English for learners who study from the English Math edition.
  • Experience preparing learners for the Egyptian secondary certificate, in school or one to one.
  • A quiet place to teach, a stable connection and a way to write mathematics on screen, by tablet, pen pad or shared whiteboard.

Skills that show in a lesson

  • Drawing a three-dimensional figure on a flat screen so a learner can see which plane holds which line.
  • Turning a statics question into a clean force diagram before any equation is written.
  • Spotting arithmetic slips inside a correct method and fixing the habit behind them.
  • Explaining why a proof by induction holds, one step at a time, until the learner can write it unaided.
  • Pacing a lesson so the learner does most of the solving.

The two papers ahead of your learners

Mathematics carries 60 of the 320 marks in the Secondary 3 total for the mathematics branch, split evenly between two papers. Pure mathematics is worth 30 and applied mathematics is worth 30, and each is a two-hour sitting. In July 2026 the pure paper held 20 questions, 18 of them multiple choice and 2 essay, and the applied paper held another 20 across statics and dynamics. That makes 40 questions for 60 marks, and every question a learner leaves blank is a mark that the admission minimum will remember.

Read those last two numbers together. Most learners in the branch pass, and the contest happens high up the scale, where 275.5 marks opened the first stage of university admission in 2026. A tutor here works on the marks between good and excellent: the single slip in a long differentiation, the force left off a diagram, the essay answer that reached the right value with half the steps missing.

What changes on the 2027 paper

A ministerial decision of August 2026 sets the Thanaweya Amma certificate exam at half multiple choice and half essay starting with the 2026/27 school year. On a pure paper that carried 18 choice questions and 2 essays in 2026, that is a large shift. Learners who prepared by drilling options now need to write complete solutions under time pressure, and they need someone who reads their writing and marks it the way an examiner would.

The same school year brings other facts a tutor plans around:

  • The 2027 exams run from Saturday 26 June to Wednesday 21 July 2027 under the ministry calendar; the per-subject timetable had not been published when that calendar was announced.
  • Thanaweya Amma learners in 2026/27 sit the exam with no 60% assessment condition attached, so the whole year can point at the final papers.
  • The ministry has stated that Thanaweya Amma has not been cancelled and that both systems stay open to learners.
  • For the 2026 exams the ministry published its pure mathematics sample papers in Arabic and in English, and the press has reported a ministry list of calculator models allowed in the exam hall. Lessons use both.

Two books, two weights

The pure book moves from algebra into space and then into calculus: the binomial theorem, complex numbers, geometry and measurement in three dimensions, lines and planes in space, differentiation and its applications, the behaviour of functions, and the definite integral. The applied book opens with statics (moments, coplanar forces, couples) and turns to dynamics (motion in a straight line, Newton's laws in use, and work, energy and power).

Each paper is worth exactly the same 30 marks, and learners rarely feel them as equal. Many are at ease with calculus and lose their footing in statics, where a question starts with a picture the learner has to build. Others handle derivatives well and freeze when a question places two lines in space. The tutor this role needs is equally strong in both books, and plans the year so the weaker half gets the hours.

The Secondary 2 learners on the Baccalaureate

The second group on this role studies the Egyptian Baccalaureate. In Secondary 2 every learner takes Arabic, Egyptian history and a first foreign language, plus one specialism, and on the Medicine and Life Sciences track that specialism is mathematics or physics. The learners who choose mathematics meet a new book: the first-term volume runs to 206 pages across four chapters, Algebraic Proofs, Sequences, Complex Numbers and Equations, and Geometry and Equations.

Inside those chapters sit the topics that decide a Secondary 2 term:

  • Expanding and factorising cubic expressions, complex fractions, and the binomial and multinomial theorems.
  • Division of polynomials, the remainder and factor theorems, identities, proofs and inequalities.
  • Arithmetic and geometric sequences, sigma notation, difference sequences, recurrence relations and mathematical induction.
  • Square roots of negative numbers, the discriminant, the link between roots and coefficients, and cubic equations.
  • Coordinate geometry of triangles, straight lines and the circle.

An English-language Math edition of the same book is issued for the state language schools, and many learners there want lessons in the language of their book. A companion tasks and assessments book holds classwork, homework, weekly assessments and monthly tests, and the ministry has published the 2027 Secondary 2 curricula on its e-library. A tutor on this role keeps both editions open and teaches each learner in the vocabulary their teacher will mark.

The exam itself is marked out of 100 per subject inside a 600 total. There are two attempts a year: the first attempt is compulsory and costs nothing, the July attempt is optional and paid per subject, and the better of the two marks counts. Each paper splits evenly between multiple choice and essay, and attempts stay open across up to four academic years. So a Secondary 2 learner needs steady weekly work to qualify, and exam technique to make the first attempt count.

Where these learners lose marks

  • A question set in space. The learner reads about two planes and a line and cannot picture where they meet. The fix is drawing, rotating and labelling before any working begins.
  • Statics after calculus. Moments and couples feel like a different subject. The learner needs a fixed routine: diagram, every force named, the point chosen for moments, then the equation.
  • A right method with a wrong number. The chain is sound and a sign drops in the fourth line. A tutor finds the line and builds the habit of checking it.
  • A paper longer than the clock. Twenty questions in two hours leaves six minutes each, and the essays take more. Timed sets teach a learner when to move on.
  • A changed exam in the final year. With half the paper now essay, a learner who trained on options must learn to write a solution that stands up without the choices beside it.
  • Induction that feels like a trick. Secondary 2 learners follow the steps and doubt the logic. They need to see why the base case and the inductive step together prove every case.
  • Signs in the binomial expansion. Negative terms raised to odd and even powers trip Secondary 2 and Secondary 3 learners alike.
  • An empty page. The answer is clear in the learner's mind and two lines reach the paper. The essay half pays for every step that is written.

A lesson on moments, as it runs on screen

One 60-minute statics lesson

  1. Warm-up from last time

The learner solves one short question from the previous lesson's weak spot while the tutor follows each line of working as it appears on the shared board.

  2. The picture first

A rod rests on two supports with loads along it. The learner draws it, marks every force with its direction, and names the point about which moments will be taken.

  3. Choosing the point

The tutor asks why one support is the better choice, and the learner sees that it removes an unknown from the equation.

  4. Writing it as the examiner reads it

The learner writes the full solution, each step on its own line with units, and the tutor corrects each line in a second colour.

  5. Timed choice questions

Four multiple-choice items on one idea, against the clock, so the method becomes fast as well as right.

  6. The note

The lesson closes with a short written summary of the routine and the one question the learner will try alone before the next lesson.

The same shape serves a pure lesson. On a question about the angle between a line and a plane, the first ten minutes go to the figure: the tutor sketches a box, picks out the plane and the line, and the learner finds the projection on screen before writing a single cosine.

How the year runs for you

The 2026/27 school year began on 12 September 2026 and ends on 24 June 2027, 183 school days in all. In the first term, Secondary 3 learners build the units and Secondary 2 learners face their weekly assessments and first monthly tests, so lessons follow the school book closely. The mid-year holiday (23 January until 4 February 2027) is the time for review and the first full timed papers. Term two begins on 6 February 2027, and from spring onward the work turns to sample papers.

The Secondary 2 learners sit their compulsory first attempt before the Secondary 3 papers begin. From late June to late July the Secondary 3 learners sit their papers, and the weeks just before each mathematics paper carry the most revision of the year. A Secondary 2 learner who wants a higher mark may return for the July attempt, so the summer carries both groups.

Two systems at once

A ministry official put Baccalaureate take-up at 99% for 2026/27, about 832,000 learners, while the ministry keeps Thanaweya Amma open. A Secondary 3 learner who changes track on the Baccalaureate also takes the new track's specialisms, one from Secondary 2 and two from Secondary 3. A tutor on this role reads both rulebooks, knows which one a learner sits under, and builds the lessons around that learner's own paper.

The craft we look for

Strong candidates teach the idea before the rule: why the derivative gives the slope, why a couple turns a body without moving it, why induction reaches every whole number. This year's book, its order and its notation are second nature to them, and they mark working line by line. They stay calm with a learner in a heavy year, and they go back below the current year when a gap in earlier algebra is what holds a learner up. That standard runs through our whole network of Egyptian tutors, and any learner who asks for another maths tutor is rematched free of charge.

Questions from maths applicants

Does this role cover both pure and applied mathematics?
Yes. The Secondary 3 paper gives 30 marks to each, and learners often ask for help with the half they find harder, which is frequently statics or three-dimensional geometry. A tutor who is strong in calculus and unsure of moments and couples would leave a learner short. Show us in your application that you can take a learner through both books, from the binomial theorem to work, energy and power.
Will I teach in Arabic or in English?
You may teach in either. Most Thanaweya Amma learners study from the Arabic edition, and for the 2026 exams the ministry published its pure mathematics sample papers in Arabic and in English. Baccalaureate learners in the state language schools use the English Math edition of the Secondary 2 book. Tell us which you teach in comfortably; each learner gets a tutor who works in the language of their book.
How does the move to half essay change my lessons?
From 2026/27 half the Thanaweya Amma paper is essay, up from 2 of 20 questions on the 2026 pure paper. Lessons give real time to written solutions: each step on its own line, the reason for each step stated, units carried through. You read the learner's working as an examiner would and mark the first line where it goes wrong.
What do Secondary 2 Baccalaureate learners need most from a maths tutor?
Two things. During the year they need steady work on weekly assessments and monthly tests, because only learners who complete 60% of them may sit the first attempt. In the book they need help with the new proof-heavy chapters: algebraic identities, inequalities, mathematical induction and recurrence relations, which ask for reasoning that earlier years rarely demanded.
Which tools do I need to show three-dimensional figures online?
A way to draw clearly on screen: a tablet with a pen, a graphics pad or a shared whiteboard you write on with ease. Lines and planes in space, angles between them and solids with measurements all need a figure the learner can watch you build. A camera pointed at paper is fine for quick sketches, and the learner should be able to draw back on the same board.
Should I know the calculator rules for the exam hall?
Yes. The press has reported a ministry list of calculator models allowed in Thanaweya Amma exam halls, so confirm the current rule with the learner's school, and a learner should practise all year on a permitted model. Part of your work is teaching efficient calculator use for the applied paper and for definite integrals, while making sure every essay answer still shows the steps a marker needs to award the marks.
When in the year do maths lessons peak?
Secondary 2 Baccalaureate learners build toward their first attempt, compulsory and free, with a second, optional sitting in July. Secondary 3 learners sit between 26 June and 21 July 2027. Review work fills the mid-year holiday, which starts on 23 January 2027 and ends on 4 February, and the weeks before each paper bring the heaviest revision. Keep your free hours up to date so each match fits your week.
