The role at a glance
Every lesson is online, one tutor with one learner on video, so you teach from home at the hours you keep free in Cairo time.
The role is part-time: you teach as an independent tutor, alongside your studies or your other work.
The fee
The fee runs from EGP 90 to 410 an hour by subject and level; each offer names its exact rate before you accept it, and we pay you for every lesson you teach.
Every learner who asks for a different tutor gets one free of charge, so each match you keep is a learner who chose to stay.
If you teach at a government school or a university today, apply all the same: a person reviews your application first and talks it through with you.

What you do
- Give live one-to-one video lessons through the Secondary 3 English course: grammar, vocabulary, reading, translation, writing and the set novel.
- Prepare Baccalaureate Secondary 2 learners for their weekly assessments and for the half multiple-choice, half essay certificate paper marked out of 100.
- Mark every piece of writing in writing, return it before the next lesson and set one precise change for the learner to make.
- Drill translation in both directions, Arabic to English and English to Arabic, until the learner can tell a natural sentence from a word-for-word one.
- Work through the ministry's model papers and the official concepts booklet so the learner knows the paper as it is set.
- Record each lesson and a short progress note after it, so the next lesson starts from what the learner actually needs.
- Plan the term against the school calendar, with heavier exam practice after the midyear break and in the weeks before June.
What you bring
- A university degree in English, English literature, translation or education with an English major.
- Classroom or tutoring experience with Secondary 2 or Secondary 3 English in Egypt, on the Thanaweya Amma, the Egyptian Baccalaureate or both.
- Command of this year's ministry book, The Count of Monte Cristo for Secondary 3 and The Lost World for Secondary 2.
- Fluent spoken English and clear Modern Standard Arabic, used where an explanation lands faster in Arabic.
- A laptop or computer, a headset, a quiet room and a stable internet connection for live video lessons.
Skills that show in a lesson
- Explaining why one of four close options is correct, with the grammar rule named.
- Correcting a paragraph line by line on a shared screen while the learner watches.
- Turning a plot summary into an answer that judges, reasons and cites evidence.
- Timing a full paper and showing a learner where the minutes go.
- Keeping a learner calm and working in a heavy exam year.
Why English weighs so much in Secondary 3
Five subjects make up a Thanaweya Amma learner's total of 320 marks: Arabic is out of 80, and the remaining four counted subjects are out of 60 each. The first foreign language is one of those four in all three branches, Science, Mathematics and Literary, so every learner in the year sits an English paper worth 60 marks toward the total. The second foreign language sits outside the total, beside religious and national education. For a learner reaching for a high Tansik minimum, English is one of the few papers that every branch shares.
The stakes are real. In 2026, 825,867 candidates sat the new-system exams and 75.1 percent passed, about four points below 2025. The first-stage minimums that summer were 94.06 percent for medicine, 93.28 percent for dentistry, 92.03 percent for pharmacy and 86.41 percent for engineering. At those levels a few marks in English decide which faculty a learner enters, and the learners who book this tutor know it.

Read that table the way a tutor does. Grammar and reading together carry 32 of the 60 marks, so most lessons in the autumn are built around them. Translation is worth 8 marks and costs learners far more than its size suggests, because it tests both languages at once. The essay questions carry 9 marks between them, and they are where a careful tutor finds marks a learner did not know were available.
The paper is changing shape from 2026/2027
A ministerial decision of 17 August 2026 moves Thanaweya Amma Secondary 3 papers to 50 percent multiple choice and 50 percent essay starting in 2026/2027, and adds a 60 percent assessment condition for Thanaweya Amma candidates from 2027/2028. For an English tutor that means the essay share of the paper grows sharply this year. A learner trained mainly on bubble sheets now needs sentences, paragraphs and translated lines that hold up when a marker reads them.
Two things stay steady. The set reader for Secondary 3 remains The Count of Monte Cristo, a school version of the Dumas novel, into the 2027 course, and the examined areas remain grammar, vocabulary, translation, comprehension, writing and the novel. In 2026 the ministry issued an official English concepts booklet that candidates used inside the exam hall, with an organised review of the tenses and grammar. A tutor who teaches with that booklet open on screen trains the learner to use the one reference allowed on the desk.
Secondary 2 English on the Egyptian Baccalaureate
Law 169 of 2025 created the Egyptian Baccalaureate: three years, optional and free, with a certificate that ranks equal to the Thanaweya Amma, and no transfer into or out of it. The minister put the share of first-secondary learners choosing it at 95 percent last school year. So the Secondary 2 learners of 2026/2027 are almost all Baccalaureate learners, and English is one of their four counted subjects, beside Arabic, Egyptian history and one subject set by the track.
The certificate totals 600 marks, two thirds of them (400) earned in Secondary 2 and the other 200 in Secondary 3, with every subject marked out of 100. Every paper is half multiple choice on a bubble sheet and half short essay questions drawn from reviewed question banks. The first attempt is compulsory and free; the July resit is optional and charged per subject, and the better mark stands. The first attempt is open only to a learner who has completed 60 percent of the assessments set each week and each month, so the weekly work is part of the exam itself.

The set reader is The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle, adapted for Grade 11: ten chapters across 78 pages, from A Dream of Adventure to Proof Before the World. Its chapter questions ask the learner to explain, analyse and evaluate, then finish with a JRE task. The official term-one distribution runs 16 weeks from September to December, one unit every two weeks, an assessment closing every week, five story chapters and a revision week. Part two of the book carries concepts six to ten, from The Space We Share to Behind the Buy. One more detail matters for marking practice: a learner is credited when an answer meets the learning outcome, even where its wording differs from the official key.
Where these learners lose marks
Learners who book English lessons describe the same handful of problems, in their own words. Each one is a lesson plan waiting to be written.
- The learner knows the rule and still picks the wrong option. The learner can recite the rule for the past perfect and still picks the simple past under time pressure, because the cue in the sentence goes unread.
- All four options look right. Close vocabulary choices punish a learner who learnt words as a list. Each word needs a sentence it lives in.
- The clock runs out before the writing. Three hours feels long until a learner lingers over the multiple-choice section and reaches the writing with little time left.
- The Arabic-to-English sentence comes out strange. Word order, articles and prepositions carried over from Arabic produce English that a marker reads as a translation.
- The story is known and the answer is a retelling. A learner who has read The Count of Monte Cristo or The Lost World twice summarises the plot when the question asks for a judgment with evidence.
- A memorised answer meets a question that wants an opinion. Baccalaureate essay questions ask the learner to take a position and defend it in English.
- Weekly assessments pile up. A Secondary 2 learner who falls two weeks behind on groups A, B and C starts to fall short of the 60 percent condition.
An English lesson on screen, from start to finish
A typical hour opens with the writing marked since the last lesson. The tutor shares the learner's paragraph on screen, with corrections in a second colour, and asks for one change: a clearer topic sentence, a linking word, or a verb tense held steady across the paragraph. The learner rewrites that sentence live while the tutor watches the cursor move.
The middle of the lesson goes to the paper itself. A set of ten grammar questions from a ministry model paper is answered against a timer, and then every wrong choice is opened up: which word in the stem was the clue, which rule it calls, and why the tempting option fails. Translation follows the same pattern in both directions, one sentence at a time, with the learner reading the English version aloud to hear whether it sounds like English.
The last part belongs to the novel or to an essay question. With a Secondary 3 learner that may be a short answer on Edmond Dantès written to the marks it carries. With a Secondary 2 learner it is often a JRE answer about The Lost World: one clear judgment, the reason for it, and a line from the chapter as evidence. The lesson closes with one piece of homework that can be marked before the next session, and the tutor's short progress note goes in after the call.
How the tutor's year runs
The 2026/2027 school year, as an English tutor lives it
September to December: build the base
Schools open on 12 September 2026. Secondary 2 learners move through units 1 to 5 with an assessment every week; Secondary 3 learners work grammar, vocabulary and reading hard while the novel is read chapter by chapter.
Late January: the midyear break
The break opens on 23 January and lasts until 4 February 2027. It is the time to close gaps, with extra work on translation and writing.
February to April: second term and model papers
Term two starts on 6 February. In 2026 the ministry published its Secondary 3 model papers from 28 February, and full timed papers become the core of each week.
Before the summer: the Secondary 2 certificate sitting
The obligatory first attempt for Secondary 2 falls on the days the ministry's final timetable sets. Schools close on 24 June 2027.
26 June to 21 July: Thanaweya Amma exams
The first round of the 2027 Thanaweya Amma runs across these weeks. English lessons in this window are short, focused and close to the paper date.
July and August: second chances
Secondary 2 learners may take the optional July attempt, and the higher mark counts. In 2026 the Thanaweya Amma second round ran from 22 to 27 August for the new system.
Who books an English tutor at this level
They include Science- and Mathematics-branch learners in Secondary 3 who need English to stay level with their strongest subjects, and Literary-branch learners for whom English and Arabic carry a large share of the total. Baccalaureate learners in Secondary 2 work with a tutor from the autumn to keep pace with the weekly assessments and the 60 percent condition.
Others come from further away. Egyptian learners living abroad sit the ministry's exams through the Our Children Abroad platform, and the second-term exams of 2025/2026 for first and second secondary were held electronically through it. These learners sit the ministry's exams like their classmates at home, and an online tutor in Cairo time suits them well. A smaller group looks past the certificate: some private universities in Egypt ask for proof of academic English through tests such as IELTS or TOEFL, and do not treat an English-medium school as proof. IELTS Academic, for one, has four parts: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Those learners want the exam marks and the habits that carry into a university lecture.
What a strong application for this role shows
What we look for in a tutor for Secondary 2 and 3 learners:
- They know this year's book. They can name the units of the Secondary 2 course and the chapters of both set novels, and they teach from the current ministry material.
- They mark in writing. A paragraph comes back with corrections the learner can read again a week later.
- They read translation both ways. They hear when an English sentence is carrying Arabic grammar, and they can show the learner how to repair it.
- They treat the paper as it is set. Mark weights, question types and timing shape their lessons, and they keep up with the half-and-half change.
- They move between English and Arabic with purpose. The lesson runs in English, and Arabic comes in at the point where it clears an idea in seconds.
- They stay calm. A Secondary 3 learner in May needs a steady voice and a clear plan for the next hour.
