The role at a glance

Every lesson is online, one tutor with one learner on video, so you teach from home at the hours you keep free in Cairo time.

The role is part-time: you teach as an independent tutor, alongside your studies or your other work.

The fee

The fee runs from EGP 90 to 410 an hour by subject and level; each offer names its exact rate before you accept it, and we pay you for every lesson you teach.

Every learner who asks for a different tutor gets one free of charge, so each match you keep is a learner who chose to stay.

If you teach at a government school or a university today, apply all the same: a person reviews your application first and talks it through with you.

What you do

  • Teach the Secondary 3 biology book to one science-branch learner at a time, covering both halves: structure and function in living organisms, then molecular biology.
  • Find the exact point where a learner's understanding breaks in the first lessons, from a short diagnostic built on past-paper questions.
  • Rebuild each process as a labelled diagram the learner can draw unaided, from plant tissues to the stages of protein synthesis.
  • Drill the multiple-choice half against the clock and teach the learner to read every option before marking an answer.
  • Train the written half: short, precise answers that earn both marks of a two-mark question.
  • Record every lesson as taught, with the chapter covered and what the learner still needs, so the next lesson starts where this one ended.
  • Plan the learner's revision backwards from 26 June 2027, the day the exam window opens (it closes on 21 July).

What you bring

  • A degree in biology, a life science, medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, agriculture or science education, or a degree in another field with proven years of teaching this syllabus.
  • Close familiarity with this year's Secondary 3 biology book and of how the 2027 paper is set.
  • Fluent teaching Arabic, plus the English biological terms used in official language schools.
  • A laptop or desktop with a stable connection, a webcam, a headset and a drawing surface you can share on screen, such as a tablet with a stylus or a writing pad.

Skills that show in a lesson

  • Drawing clean, labelled biological diagrams live while you explain them.
  • Exact use of terms, in Arabic and English, down to the single word a marker looks for.
  • Turning a three-hour paper into timed practice a learner can sit in one lesson.
  • Spotting a misread question from the answer a learner gives.
  • Calm, steady conduct with learners under exam-year pressure.

Why biology weighs so much in the science branch

The science branch is the largest of the three Thanaweya Amma branches, and biology is one of its three counted sciences beside chemistry and physics. In 2026 the branch registered 543,120 learners, 507,415 of them sat the exams, and 382,720 passed. Every one of those learners sat biology, and its 60 marks fed straight into the total that Tansik ranks.

Those 60 marks matter because the margins at the top are thin. In phase 1 of the 2026 Tansik the science-branch threshold stood at 292 out of 320, and human medicine asked for 301. A learner aiming at medicine, dentistry or pharmacy can afford to lose very few marks across the whole paper set, so a single dropped biology question shows up directly in the faculty they reach. A subject is passed at 50% of its marks, which matters to a different group of learners: the ones who need biology to clear the line so they avoid a second round.

The 2026 biology paper, mark by mark

Biology was sat on 16 July 2026, from 9:00 to 12:00, three hours for 46 questions. The paper leaned heavily on multiple choice, and its marks split into three kinds of question. A tutor who knows this breakdown can turn a vague worry about "the exam" into a precise plan of where the marks sit.

The level of the questions matters as much as their format. The specification published two days before the 2026 paper put 70% of its questions at basic and intermediate level, with the remaining 30% measuring analysis, inference and the application of a concept to a situation the learner had never seen in the book. That 30% is where well-prepared learners lose the marks that separate 292 from 301, and it is the part of the paper a one-to-one tutor is best placed to train, because it rewards reasoning aloud with someone who questions every step.

The class of 2027 writes half its paper

Starting in 2026/27 the Secondary 3 Thanaweya Amma paper is set half as multiple choice and half as written questions, following the decisions the Ministry of Education and Technical Education announced on 17 August 2026. Set beside the 2026 biology paper, where written answers carried 4 marks out of 60, this is the largest single change a biology tutor plans for this year.

The 2027 first-session exams begin on 26 June and finish on 21 July. The rule that a learner must complete 60% of the weekly and monthly assessments before sitting the exam reaches the Thanaweya Amma from 2027/28, so this year's Secondary 3 learners are judged on the final papers alone. Every lesson in the year points at those weeks in the summer.

The book you will teach

The Secondary 3 biology book has two parts. The first is structure and function in living organisms: support and movement, hormonal coordination, reproduction and immunity. The second is molecular biology: DNA, the nucleic acids and protein synthesis. Applicants who taught the subject a few years ago should open this year's edition before their first lesson, because learners are examined on its wording and its diagrams.

Points in the year's teaching that a tutor of this book handles every season:

  • The opening chapter starts with support in plants and the simple tissues, parenchyma, collenchyma and sclerenchyma, which learners mix up as soon as the cell walls are compared.
  • Support and movement continue into the animal body, where a labelled diagram carries the marks of a written answer.
  • Hormonal coordination asks for each gland matched to its hormones and each hormone to its effect, a long chain of pairs that has to be secure under time pressure.
  • Reproduction and immunity follow, each built on sequences of events that a learner has to hold in the right order.
  • Molecular biology closes the book with DNA, the nucleic acids and the building of a protein, the most abstract part of the year.

The science adviser's office at the ministry issues the month-by-month distribution plan for biology and geology in Secondary 3, and an earlier year's plan placed minerals and rocks in the months of the second term. A tutor keeps a copy of the current plan beside the learner's school timetable, so lessons run a step ahead of school or consolidate what school has just covered, whichever the learner needs that week.

Where science-branch learners lose biology marks

The learners who book this subject are usually capable and hard-working. Their marks leak in a handful of predictable places, and a tutor who can name the leak in the first lesson saves weeks of general revision.

  • Learnt it, still missed it. The learner can recite a whole chapter and still chooses the wrong option, because the question applied the idea to an unfamiliar case. This is the 30% of the paper built on analysis and inference.
  • Follows the drawing, cannot produce it. The diagram makes sense on the tutor's screen and falls apart on a blank page. Labels go missing, arrows point the wrong way, and the written half punishes both.
  • Protein synthesis as one blur. The stages of building a protein run together, so the learner cannot say which molecule does what, or in what order.
  • Glands and hormones crossed. Two similar-sounding hormones swap places, or a hormone is credited to the wrong gland, and a two-mark question goes with it.
  • Reading too fast. Easy one-mark questions are lost to a skipped word such as "except" or "incorrect", across a paper of 44 multiple-choice items.
  • Trained for boxes, now writing. Learners who prepared for shaded answers freeze in front of a question that asks them to explain, and their written answers run long without landing the term the marker needs.

Inside a live biology lesson

Take a 60-minute lesson on hormonal coordination for a learner who keeps confusing glands. It opens with five past-paper style questions answered against a timer, which shows within minutes whether the confusion sits in the names, the effects or the reading of the question. The tutor then shares a blank drawing surface and the learner sketches the glands from memory while saying each hormone aloud.

How the hour is spent

  1. Diagnose

Timed questions from the chapter, marked on the spot, with each wrong answer traced to its cause.

  2. Draw

The learner rebuilds the diagram on the shared screen; the tutor corrects labels and arrows as they appear.

  3. Name

Every structure and hormone is written with its exact term, in Arabic and in English for language-school learners.

  4. Apply

Two unfamiliar scenarios test the idea outside the book's own examples, the kind of question that sits in the paper's harder 30%.

  5. Write

One written question answered in full and marked against two marks, then rewritten shorter and sharper.

  6. Record

The tutor logs the lesson, the chapter and the one weakness to open with next time.

The same pattern carries over to protein synthesis or immunity: diagnose, draw, name, apply, write. Each lesson ends with the learner able to do something on paper that was out of reach when it began.

Your year with a Secondary 3 learner

The school year sets the rhythm of this role. School teaching opens on 12 September 2026 and closes on 24 June 2027, two days before the first-session exams open. The work shifts in character as the months pass.

  1. September to December. First-term chapters taught carefully, with diagrams and terms fixed from the start. This is the stretch where structure and function is built properly.
  2. January. Transfer grades sit their first-term exams between 9 and 14 January 2027, and the midyear break follows, 23 January through 4 February. For Secondary 3 learners the break is a chance for focused catch-up lessons on whichever chapter has slipped.
  3. February to May. From 6 February 2027 the second term is under way with the remaining chapters, and timed mixed practice begins to sit beside new teaching.
  4. June and July. School teaching ends, full papers replace single chapters, and the final weeks before the biology day are spent on the questions each learner still gets wrong.

After the results comes Tansik, where each learner lists 75 choices and the faculty thresholds turn every biology mark into a place.

What a biology tutor here needs

Every tutor teaching this role meets five standards. Each one shows inside a single lesson, so the team reading your application looks for evidence of them in how you describe your teaching.

  • Depth in the subject. You can answer the question behind the question, such as why a structure has the shape it has, so the learner can reason through an unfamiliar case.
  • Command of this year's book. You teach from the current edition and know which wording and which diagrams the learner will meet in the paper.
  • Teaching through diagrams. You draw live, cleanly, and you get the learner drawing within the first ten minutes.
  • Precision with terms. One word wins or loses a written mark, and you hold the learner to it in Arabic and, for language-school learners, in English.
  • Conduct for an exam year. Secondary 3 is a pressured year; you keep lessons punctual, calm and focused on the next mark the learner can gain.

Questions from biology tutors

Do I need to have taught the Secondary 3 biology book before?
Experience with this exact book helps, and a biology or life science graduate who studies the current edition closely can teach it well. The team looks for command of the two halves of the book, structure and function and molecular biology, and the ability to explain each process as a diagram. Name in your application the chapters you have taught and at what level.
Is the biology teaching done in Arabic or English?
Most science-branch learners study biology in Arabic, and lessons with them run in Arabic. Learners from official language schools are examined with English terminology, so a tutor who teaches them uses the English terms alongside the Arabic explanation. If you can teach both groups, say so in your application, since it widens the learners you can be matched with.
How should I prepare learners now that half the 2027 paper is written?
Build writing into every lesson from the first week. In 2026 written questions carried only 4 of the 60 biology marks, so many learners have rarely written a biology answer under exam conditions. Short, exact answers that name the structure, state the process and use the right term are the ones that earn both marks. Mark each written answer against its marks and have the learner rewrite it.
Which chapters cost learners the most marks?
Hormonal coordination and molecular biology are the usual sources of lost marks. Learners confuse glands with their hormones, and the stages of protein synthesis blur into one another. Plant support tissues at the start of the book also catch learners who memorise names without the features that tell parenchyma, collenchyma and sclerenchyma apart. A first diagnostic lesson shows which of these applies to each learner.
Is the Thanaweya Amma still worth building a tutoring practice around?
The current Secondary 3 cohort sits the Thanaweya Amma in summer 2027, and that cohort needs tutors all year. Alongside it, an education ministry official put opt-in to the Egyptian Baccalaureate at 99% for 2026/27. In August 2026 the chairman of the private school owners' association said he expects the next exam to be the last one held, which is his own view. For this cohort, the summer 2027 biology paper is the goal every lesson works towards.
Can I teach a learner who is aiming for medicine?
Yes, and many science-branch learners aim at medicine, dentistry or pharmacy. In 2026 the phase-1 threshold for human medicine was 301 out of 320, so these learners are chasing the last few marks across the whole paper set. Lessons with them centre on the 30% of questions that test analysis and application, timed full papers and a written half free of avoidable slips.
What happens if a learner and I are not the right fit?
A learner who wants a different biology tutor gets one free of charge, and the change is handled by the team. For you, that means each match starts fresh with a learner who wants this subject taught your way. Clear lesson records help here: the next tutor, or you with your next learner, picks up from an accurate note of the chapters covered.
